Teachers, Teacher Education, and Professional Development
A four year bachelor’s degree in preschool and elementary education is a requirement for teaching preschool and elementary school. These programs train generalists to teach all subjects except for those requiring specialists, such as music, physical education and health, and foreign languages. Secondary school teachers must hold a bachelor’s degree in secondary education, preferably with a specialization in one or two subject areas listed in the Basic School Regulation.
Requirements for Ongoing Professional Development
The most common forms of professional development for teachers are university studies, training provided by the MEESR or school boards, and conferences. Teachers increasingly appreciate peer-led continuing education and collaboration in action-research projects.
